The Research Triangle Institute (RTI) began work in to investigate contaminated sites in the United States where cleanup measures have been carried out to enable specific redevelopment of a site. This work resulted in a report issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August , documenting 16 uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Introduction. Land can be contaminated by a variety of substances that pose immediate or long-term risks to human health and the environment. Such contaminants may escape from the site to cause air, land, surface water or groundwater pollution, and in some cases may even damage buildings and underground services, or contaminate the food chain.

Reclamation and redevelopment of contaminated properties in the United States (U.S.) and Europe have been addressed by analyzing what has and is being done at the present time. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) initiated an effort in which susbtantially documented the U.S experience in the area of reclamation and reuse of the land. Guide-lines and codes of practice for the redevelopment of contaminated sites should address acceptable residual levels of contamination of substances Assessment of health risks in the redevelopment of contaminated land Open PDF. Contaminated land and the methods and legal controls governing its reclamation for subsequent development and use are of great current interest and concern. This volume in the Issues in Environmental Science and Technology series contains seven articles which treat the many aspects of this subject, ranging from risk assessment and risk management, through specific remediation .   This book is a good introduction into contaminated land, it covers all the basics and provides a list of further reading into each topic. It can be annoying, when it keeps referencing the same few books. Alot of the information is taken from the Reclamation of Contaminated Land Reference of the same author, which is in the order of 4 times Reviews: 7.

“This volume on brownfields reclamation is a much welcomed scholarly endeavor and an impressive achievement. While much research involving brownfields and urban environmental problems function with imposed definitions and disparate analyses, this research provides a much needed holistic and integrated approach to brownfields specifically, but also the larger urban environmental policy arena.

Land Contamination & Reclamation is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal covering risk assessment, investigation, containment, treatment and monitoring of industrially contaminated land. It also features legislation, policy and communication issues.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of remediation and rehabilitation techniques and strategies for contaminated and anthropogenically disturbed land. Rehabilitation approaches in the urban environment, such as brownfield redevelopment and urban mining, are discussed.

Land contamination is of global concern with many of the worlds industries potentially harming the environment and human health.

Along with rapidly changing policy and technological developments, this is an interdisciplinary area in which successful contaminated land management depends on the expertise of and interaction between a number of scientific and engineering disciplines.
